Wacky Amphibian Adaptations: Moustached toads

As we get ready to kick off 2014, Year of the Salamander, I just wanted to share a fun frog adaptation. Imagine that you grow a series of spikes along your upper lip as a moustache… and you use your moustache to fight! That is exactly what the male Emei moustached toad (Leptobatrachium boringii) from China does. During the breeding season, males compete for mates by using their spiked lip ornaments to fight. To see a video of two males fighting and learn more about this amazing frog’s behavior, please check out this post on Zoologger. Hoppy New Year’s, everyone!
